  • Basic Description
    • Function in any medical situation where it is elected to support a patients cardiopulmonary system as operator of extracorporeal circulatory and/or cardiopulmonary support equipment. Assist physicians in the care of patients as relative to the profession of extracorporeal technology through consultation and/or operation of related equipment. Competent in the conduct of perfusion and the essential practices of extra corporeal circulation as listed by the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology.

      • The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

      • Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist.
    • Minimum Requirement Comments
      • Must be a graduate of a Perfusion program. All Perfusionist will be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Those perfusionists hired after January 3, 1989, that are not certified must achieve certification within two years of being employed while starting the certification process as soon as possible after employment. Perfusionist working at CAMC prior to January 3, 1989 that are not certified will not be expected to become certified until such time that the profession requires it. These actions are driven by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, the American Society of Extra-Corporeal Technology, or the Joint Commission of Hospitals or any other regulatory agency carrying proper jurisdiction. Continual re-certification is mandatory and necessary record-keeping involving re-certification is the responsibility of the Perfusionist. Incumbents traveling on behalf of CAMC will do so as representatives of the CAMC perfusion department and conduct themselves accordingly. Incumbents will become members of professional organizations and complete all certification processes as required by the department.
