Summary

  • Basic Description
    • This position will be responsible for assessing coding and DRG accuracy for inpatient & outpatient accounts. The position will also act as a liaison with Clinical Documentation Specialists and Coders to settle differences in coding and DRG assignment; with Coders and Patient Accounts to resolve coding and billing issues; and provide clinical and documentation clarification facility-wide. The position will supervise the coding staff including hiring, firing, discipline, planning & evaluations.

    • Degree / Education
      • Associate Degree - HIT
    • Level of Experience
      • 5 - 7 YEARS Progressive coding experience of at least 3 yrs; outpatient coding experience with strong grasp of coding guidelines & rules required; 3 yrs experience in Clinical Documentation Improvement
    • Lic./Cert./Reg.
      • All licensure must be current/valid and from the state of West Virginia.
      • Clin Coding Spec, Cert required to have for at least 3 yrs or Certified Professional Coder by A.A.P.C.
      • AND
      • Registry eligible RHIT Registered Health Information Technician RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator
    • Typing/Word Processing skills required for this position
    • Computer Skills required for this position
      • TYPE OF SOFTWARE Microsoft Office, Elecenteronic Medical Records Crystal Reporting preferred

      • 5 yrs progressive coding experience in addition to the required years of experience. May substitute for Associate Degree in HIT
    • Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact)
      • The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.
