Summary

  • Basic Description
    • Assist patients and their families in adjusting to the hospital environment. The CLS will design, plan and implement comprehensive programs to meet the psychosocial and developmental needs of children and their families by providing patient and parent education, preparation, and procedural support. The CLS will provide medical and therapeutic play opportunities to assess and identify the patients coping behaviors. The Child Life Specialist will make recommendations that maximize the patient and families strengths and when appropriate, the CLS will make referrals.

    • Degree / Education
      • Bachelor Degree Art Therapy- Guidance and Counseling- Education-
      • AND
      • Bachelor Degree Psychology- or Nursing
      • OR
      • Other Degree SEE SUBSTITUTION*****
    • Level of Experience
      • 2 Years working with children
    • Lic./Cert./Reg.
      • All licensure must be current/valid and from the state of West Virginia.
    • Typing/Word Processing skills required for this position

      • The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.
